What is the qibla angle?
It is the direction from your location to the Kaaba in Mecca, measured in degrees clockwise from north. For Istanbul, for example, it is about 152°.
How accurate is a phone compass?
A calibrated phone is usually accurate within ±5°. Keep it away from metal objects, magnetic cases and electronics, and calibrate by moving the phone in a figure-eight motion.
Do a few degrees of deviation invalidate the prayer?
For those who cannot see the Kaaba, facing its general direction (jihah) is sufficient; small deviations do not invalidate the prayer. Still, one should aim for the most accurate direction possible.
What is the 'qibla hour' (sun over the Kaaba)?
Twice a year the sun passes directly over the Kaaba: May 27-28 at 12:18 and July 15-16 at 12:27 Mecca time (09:18 / 09:27 UTC). Facing the sun at that minute means facing the qibla — the most reliable verification without a compass.
