How Accurate Is Finding the Qibla with a Phone? Calibration and Tips

Modern phones contain a sensor called a magnetometer; compass apps and our live compass use it. The qibla angle itself is calculated mathematically from your GPS location with essentially no error — inaccuracy comes almost entirely from the compass sensor.

What affects accuracy?

Magnetic phone cases, metal surfaces, car interiors, electronic devices and even a belt buckle can mislead the sensor. The sensor also drifts out of calibration over time; an uncalibrated phone can be off by 10-20 degrees.

How to calibrate the phone compass

Hold the phone and draw a large figure-eight in the air; repeat several times. Some phones show an on-screen prompt when calibration is needed. After calibrating, accuracy improves noticeably — usually to within ±5°.

For the most accurate result

1) Try outdoors or near a window. 2) Hold the phone flat, parallel to the ground. 3) Remove magnetic cases. 4) Compare with our map view — the dashed line shows the true direction from your location to the Kaaba. 5) If there is a mosque nearby, verify with the mihrab.

Remember: for those who cannot see the Kaaba, the general direction (jihah) is sufficient. If your phone works within ±5°, the qibla you find is fully valid in Islamic law.
