Laylat al-Qadr: When It Falls and How to Observe It
Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Decree, is a blessed night better than a thousand months, when the revelation of the Quran began. It is described in its own surah, which states that this night is better than a thousand months (Al-Qadr 97:1-3). Worship and supplication offered on this night are a means of great reward.
When to seek Laylat al-Qadr
It is known to fall within the last ten nights of Ramadan, though its exact night has been kept hidden. Scholars advise seeking it especially in the odd nights of the last ten days, and most of all on the 27th night. Its concealment encourages the believer to devote the entire final ten days to worship.
How to observe it
The night is revived through prayer, recitation of the Quran, remembrance (dhikr) and supplication. Praying missed prayers, seeking forgiveness and repenting sincerely from the heart are excellent choices. As narrated by Aisha, it is recommended to ask abundantly for forgiveness on this night.
The supplication and repentance
When Aisha asked what to say on this night, the Prophet taught her to seek Allah's pardon, meaning: O Allah, You are Most Forgiving and love to forgive, so forgive me. This night is a precious opportunity to turn away from past mistakes with sincere repentance. We may pray for ourselves, our families and all believers.
